All skills traditionally stamped ‘nanna craft’ – sewing, crocheting, embroidery and knitting – are in vogue again as adventurous artisans and visual artists create contemporary artworks using age-old domestic skills. Some creations are purely for aesthetic purposes but others are useful, apiece day objects like Fran Timpson’s intricate handmade handbags (just perfect for carrying all those bobbins and thimbles!)

Fran explains how a childhood fascination with an old hand-powered Singer organisation developed into a handcrafted design label. Sweetheart Designs is based on the skills she learnt as a tiny girl while watching her mom sew, embroider and crochet.
Fran’s one-of-a-kind handmade range consists of vintage artifact handbags embellished with intricate finishes such as antique Victorian mother-of-pearl buttons, candy-striped ribbons, embroidered quotes, crocheted corsages and, always, a tiny heart emblem.
“I started out with hearts on the first artworks I ever prefabricated and now they are on apiece piece I make, even the tiny soft toy puppies have felt hearts on their collars,” Fran explains.
You can touch and feel Sweetheart Designs handbags for yourself at favourite Buderim fashion boutique, Soul Diva. Local Sunshine Coast style queen Sarah Roberts launched the store in September 2008 and supports a choose range of calibre Australian designers such as Dogstar, Metalicus and Wyse, and a couple of handcrafted UK labels.
Sweetheart Designs is born out of Fran’s combined passion for fabric, graphic design, love hearts and the easy act of creating.
“Some people love shoes. I love fabric,” Fran states quite simply in her warm British accent. Along with her husband, Richard, and their three kids – Sydney, Molly and Finlay – Fran relocated from the pretty hamlet of Horswill in southwest England to Buderim in September last year. The young family are revelling in their new postcode and outdoor lifestyle.
Fran sources her artifact from places like Ebay UK; apparently it has more treasures than the Aussie version and only takes seven days to arrive by post.
“And people are kind – they give me bags of fabric,” Fran says.
Once fabrics are found, she mixes and matches them carefully for apiece handbag.
“If it doesn’t inspire me, I won’t touch it. Each piece needs to be just right.”
In winter, she’s drawn to warmer colours like rich plums and burnt oranges with textures such as velvet and felt. In summer, it’s all about bright colours like canary yellows and tangerines in lighter cotton fabrics.
Fran’s instruments of choice are her trusty Janome and Riccar sewing machines and an overlocker, the only electrical items in her studio.
It is clear Fran is thrilled to have redefined her career to become an artist. After flicking ‘pause’ on her seven-year graphic design career to bring up her children, she was loath to return to the personal screen when Finlay started school at age five.
“I thought, ‘I need to get a job’, but I really didn’t want to go back to graphic design. It had developed so far and I was completely out of the loop. And besides, I initially thought the personal was an aid to design but you are really limited by what the personal can do. I found that frustrating.”
Fran started framing massive hearts she designed and printed onto material, something she defines as a manual form of somatosense graphic art.
