I’d like to be a traveler. I really thing traveling can change one’s life. While traveling, you can get a superior view to other cultures, religions and so on. Since the conception of magazines, editors have employed artists, illustrators and photographers to create memorable and original artwork for entrepot covers. Beginning in the primeval 20th century, entrepot editors applied began hiring artists and illustrators to create holiday-themed entrepot covers. Holiday entrepot covers became a part of the commercialization of the holidays. Holiday-themed entrepot covers became a way of advertising consumer-driven values of the holidays. Advertising is a type of communication that is persuasive.
There are many famous holiday-themed magazines covers. Commercial art historians concur the most famous entrepot cover illustrator is the American artist Norman Rockwell, whose illustrations appeared on the covers of magazines like the Saturday Evening Post, Boys’ Life and Life magazine, for more than four decades starting in the 1930s.
Ladies Home Journal is one of the major influences of modern holiday-themed entrepot covers. The Ladies Home Journal entrepot began in 1883 and was one of the top-selling magazines of the 20th century. Ladies Home Journal holiday entrepot covers consisted of positive family-oriented holiday depictions. Most famously the entrepot covers featured art by American artist and illustrator Rose O’Neill who created the Kewpie baby doll characters.
Contemporary women’s magazines like Woman’s World, All You, Good Housekeeping, Woman’s Day and Redbook draw heavily from the primeval holiday-themed covers of Ladies Home Journal. Also home magazines like Southern Living, Country Living and Superior Homes and Gardens also are influenced by Ladies Home Journal.
Other now-famous artists to contribute memorable holiday-themed entrepot covers during the primeval 20th century include George Watson Barratt for Harper’s Weekly magazine, Blendan Campbell for the New York Times, William Cotton for the New Yorker magazine, Erte for Harper’s Bazaar magazine, Frank X. Some magazines have taken the route of issuing controversial holiday-themed entrepot covers to varying results. Esquire entrepot reportedly lost almost million in advertising and subscription revenue in 1962 when graphic artist George Lois place a portrait of the scowling boxer Sonny Liston as Santa Claus.
In 2007 Sports Illustrated entrepot took a similar approach to Esquire’s Sonny Liston Santa Claus cover with a holiday themed cover featuring New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick dressed as Santa Claus with his trademark serious expression crossways his face.
Time entrepot has also produced many memorable holiday entrepot covers including “The Night Before Christmas,” which appeared on the December 27, 1948 cover and two covers from the 1960s and 1970s that comment on the say of consumer spending.
