Barcelona’s history begins several thousands years ago. The origins of the city are not absolutely clear. First reliable records are acquirable from the Roman period. The town founded in the 1st century BC was known as Barcino. It was a colony of about 5000 inhabitants in the 2nd century AD, which strategic position on a branch of the important communication route Via Augusta granted fast commercial and economic development. The remains of the surround can be visited at the Plaça Ramon Berenguer, Carrer Tapineria and the Plaça Nova. The latter features two towers of the former gate where carriages and pedestrians entered the city. From the side of Archdeacon’s Home (Casa de l’Ardiaca) at the Plaça Nova you can see a replica of a section of the Roman aqueduct which marks one of the points where water was conveyed to the city. Right in front of it there is a so-called visual poem by the Catalan artist Joan Brossa, designed as a spelling out of the word Barcino. Just some steps from here the Cathedral is located. To see the remains of this temple, visitors have to go the Carrer Paradís in the Gothic Quarter.
